Lets Get Talking....

What Is Podcast And Its Future ?

Podcasting has become one of the conventional internet services in the present. Podcast is a file in the form of audio or video where the users/listeners can download through their computer or mobile device and listen to.

Podcast was first premiered in 2003(Nastor, 2016) ever since then the usage of podcast has being increasing. The main publishers of podcasts were broadcasters of TV and radio channels and other independent users (Gunawardena, Karagiannis, Proutiere & Vojnovic, 2009) but now podcast is emerging as a tool use by marketers to market their brands. The main reason for this is the increasing number of podcast listeners, According to the Edison Research (2018) based on the American populations the usage of podcast between the years of 2017 to 2018 are increased by 2% and this increment is applicable to all the age groups, demographics and gender.

Apart from the wide coverage they gain from podcasting the other reasons this is becoming a marketing tool is,

  • It is convenient for the listeners as they can listen to podcast even while they are driving or working out and also
  • It is inexpensive and less time consuming as it can be produced even at home.
  • Capability to make money through advertisement and sponsorships, affiliating marketing, selling you own products and donations
  • Podcast give you the opportunity to connect with your audience in a deeper level and create frantic fans for you and your brand.

Anyone has the capability to be a podcaster as long as they have something to talk about and keep it entertaining and also has a reason to start up their own podcast such as for marketing purpose or sharing mutual feelings. Even though you have the capability to start a podcast that doesn’t not mean it will be successful, therefore what can we do to grow our podcast?

Here are some tips to make your podcast a success

   1) Consistency

Almost every video, blog and article I went through did not fail to mention this term. In relations to a podcast consistency is the regularity and the reliability of a podcast. When it comes to podcasting you should always make sure that you post on a regular basis, for instance coffee break post 2 episodes a week and mugglecast that is one of the most successful podcast post 1 episode a week. Always make sure to be consistent, since if you fail on this it would frustrate many of your audience.

   2) Connections

Jerod Morris mentioned in one of his interview that there are two types of people who listen to our podcast, the listener and the audience. The listeners are the people who help in forming traffic to your podcast and the audiences are also the people helping you with the traffic but they are also the ones that are interested in your work and would go to the extent of subscribing your podcast and getting on to your email to communicate with you. Therefore always be mindful in forming connection rather than the traffic that is formed.

How can you form these connections?

First be very clear with your actions so that you target audience would understand you and the content you are trying to provide to them.

Next, build an infrastructure in your podcast to give you audience the chance to communicate with you and also engage with your audience, for an example the Showrunner podcast gives their audience the opportunity to get in touch with them by signing up to their email list and also they never fail to respond to as many emails as they can in order to engage with them.(AWeber Email Marketing, 2015)

   3) Quality

Quality is a distinctive characteristic that is possessed by something or someone, when podcasting make sure that you give you listeners something that they would value.

To add value to your podcast the first and foremost thing to be done is preparing and presenting good content. In order to do so you must first identify your own expertise, then by using these expertise create content that is unique and which will be worth the time of the listeners. For an instance the podcast Tim Ferriss interview people that are very hard to reach, therefore many people listen to the Tim Ferriss show as it is worth their time. It doesn’t mean you have to collaborate with people who are out of your reach but identify some unique plan that is within your capabilities and invest on it. (Growth Tribe, 2017 and Risley, n.d.)

Once you have prepared your content the next is to record your podcast when recording your podcast be very cautious about the environment you are recording in, make sure you choose a place as quite as possible since the microphone can easily pick up a noise and it would affect the technical quality of your podcast. (Gray, n.d.)
